Pocomoke's Weaknesses

In a way I was not surprised to not get many strengths.

I am a new blog so people have not found me yet. As a culture we generally find it easier to criticize than to praise.

And a lot of Pocomokians have become resigned or cynical. That's my first weakness - a great deal of citizen apathy.

I am going to limit my list of weaknesses for now or my post will get very long.

Stagnation due to too few people staying too long in public positions in city hall. And yes, I include the city manager in that group. One reason city managers typically do not stay in one position more than what is average is because they grow in their careers. Cities and towns also grow and change. Except Pocomoke.

Totalitarian tendencies in city hall. City officials attempt to suppress and/or discredit critics of city hall and city officials. I have observed this in the town elections over the last 15 years. Any challenger to the status quo and those currently "in power" faces considerable efforts to discredit them.

Because there are these totalitarian tendencies, people in Pocomoke are afraid to speak out. A relative works in city hall, so their job may be in jeopardy if their mom or dad speaks out. Small business owners fear having difficulties.

Pocomoke is not friendly to small business. Prior to moving to Pocomoke I owned a small, successful business in what at one time was a small town that is now part of Hampton, VA. I have lived in Pocomoke 30 years now and there is no way I would have a business in Pocomoke. There is too much interference from city hall, among other issues.

That's enough from me now.

What is wrong about Pocomoke? What needs to stop or be fixed?

  1. it's not enough room on the internet ;)

our biggest weakness is our governing body which I think has the trickle down to the rest of our problems.

the drug market in this town is worse than any place in the US, it's blatantly in your face drug sales 24/7, the police are scared of the ACLU as our officials. Control loitering and that alone would put a big damper on the drug problem.

Our streets are terrible, there are humps and bumps that I have been driving around for 30 years.

We need term limits on elected officials, this getting a council seat and keeping it for 10-20+ years is just well.... crazy. That applies to ALL positions including the manager, which should be elected or simply done away with. We do not need a city manager here, that salary alone would allow us probably 2 more police officers possibly 3, no one knows what the managers salary is.

  2. Wow this is a good question and most things that come to mind have been used. I remember the days you never had to worry about your kids cause all townsfolk looked after them and each other. We could walk or drive down any street in town no problem, konw if we drive down 4th st we get pulled over and told we were in a high drug / crime area and they wanna search our cars. why are they not in the high crime area searching cars?
My kid was searched numerous times his girlfriends were told he was no good by our local law enforcement!! lots wrong here lots right also we love pocomoke but it could be better!!

  4. The problems start from the top and trickle on down.
The investigator investigating the possible election fraud stated that the biggest problem is that the Pocomoke Police Departments ideology is completely screwed up...the law abiding upright citizens fear the police, while the criminals laugh at them.

Let's clear this up, then we can move on.

  5. The biggest problem with Pocomoke City is Russ Blake.

He is personally responsible for the open air drug market.

    Why?

The police dept reports to him and him only.

Russ Blake is personally responsible for the ENTIRE DOWNTOWN BEING BULLDOZED!!!

The buildings could have been re purposed but he decided to tear them down. So for all practical purposes there is no "historic" downtown which is pretty sad for a community that has been here since the 1600's.

The government is non-responsive to the people.

    Why?

    Russ Blake

He was never elected, reports to no one and does what he wants.

The list could go on for days but the problem is with Russ Blake.

AND for the sheeple of Pocomoke City being too sanctimoniously hypocritical to take a stand to say its wrong get the hell out of our town.

  6. POPC,
You just summed it all up pretty good. Seriouly, get rid of Russ and the battle will be at least half won. He has done nothing for this town except get grants. Lots of people can get grants. I know they will tell you he only does what the council allows him, but he has a lot of influence and can "snow job them" very easily.
